Why Preventative Arm Care Matters More Than You Think

By: Dr. Carmen Jansante, PT, DPT, CSCS

When I talk to athletes about injuries, I usually make a half-joke: “If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t play sports.”

The truth is, anytime you play, you’re putting your body at risk. And when it comes to throwing, the stress is on a whole different level. Most people are surprised when I tell them this—but when you throw, your arm is being pulled out of its socket with one and a half times your body weight. That’s an incredible amount of force going through your shoulder, elbow, scapula, and all the tissues and joints that support them.

Here’s the thing: we can counteract those stresses with the right training and programming. But too often, athletes wait until they’re already injured before they think about care. Why wait until you’re sidelined? Preventative arm care is the smarter play.

What the Research Says

This isn’t just my opinion—science backs it up.

  • Sakata et al. study (ages 8–11): Youth players who followed an arm care program saw a 49.2% decrease in medial elbow injuries compared to those who didn’t.

  • Current Concepts in Arm Care Review (adolescent players): Group-based programs that targeted multiple musculoskeletal weaknesses showed about a 50% reduction in elbow injuries.

Think about that. Injuries might be unavoidable in sports, but if you had a way to cut your risk in half, wouldn’t you do it?

Time on the Field Is Limited

Here’s what I tell every athlete: you only get so much time on the field. It doesn’t matter if you’re 10 years old, in high school, or playing at the college level—your window of opportunity is finite. Every injury takes away from that precious time.

So, if we can do something now to prevent lost time on the field, why wouldn’t we?

If you’re serious about your sport—whether it’s earning a scholarship, playing at the next level, or just being the best version of yourself—arm care is a huge advantage. Scholarships are limited. NIL deals are limited. Professional opportunities are limited. If you’re injured, you’re not in the running. Simple as that.

Why Generic Programs Aren’t Enough

Not all arm care programs are created equal. To be effective, they need to be specific to you—to your body, your strengths, and your weaknesses.

That’s what we do at Undefeated Physical Therapy and Performance. We use a handheld dynamometer to measure strength precisely from left to right, muscle group to muscle group. We test, re-test, and look for patterns so we can address your exact impairments. There’s no guessing.

Our goal is simple: keep you healthy, keep you performing, and keep you on the field.

The Takeaway

Preventative arm care isn’t glamorous, and it takes consistent hard work. But nothing beats the payoff: more time on the field, less time injured, and a better shot at reaching your goals.

If you want to stay healthy, throw harder, and play longer, don’t wait until you’re hurt to take action. Start your arm care program today—and give yourself every advantage to be the best athlete you can be.
