Why One-on-One Physical Therapy Matters for Athletic Performance

By Dr. Carmen Jansante, DPT, CSCS – Undefeated Physical Therapy & Performance

Physical therapy can feel daunting. It’s a challenge, and you often come in when you’re in pain or unable to do the things you love. You’re looking to rehab your body and get back to peak performance. And let me tell you why one-on-one care is the best way to achieve that—especially for athletes.

Everyone Heals Differently

No two athletes are the same. How you heal depends on countless factors:

  • Age

  • Diet and nutrition

  • Sleep quality

  • Training load and activity

  • The type, severity, and intensity of your injury

  • Your goals for returning to performance

At Undefeated PT, we specialize in helping high-level athletes return not just to their prior level—but to perform better than they did before the injury.

Why Traditional Physical Therapy Falls Short

I hear it all the time: people come to us after going through traditional physical therapy and say:

“It’s not the same thing. I was put in a room with a bunch of people, told to do five exercises, and no one watched me or checked in.”

That’s exactly why I created Undefeated PT. Our focus is individualized care. Traditional clinics often require:

  • 2–3 visits per week for 6–8 weeks

  • Short sessions where the therapist is splitting attention among multiple patients

  • Standardized exercise programs that aren’t tailored to your specific movement patterns, strengths, or weaknesses

When you consider deductibles, co-pays, and multiple weekly visits, these traditional services are often less cost-effective for the individual. At Undefeated PT, our approach is different:

  • Our average plan of care is around six visits for most individuals, depending on the injury

  • We see you once a week or every other week, which is more cost-effective and efficient

  • Patients often get better faster due to the individualized care and attention

We also operate outside insurance restrictions, so we’re not limited by the number of visits or procedures.

What Makes One-on-One Care Better?

Here’s what sets true individualized care apart:

  1. Full Attention

When you’re in our clinic, it’s just you and me. I watch every movement, provide constant feedback, and adjust your program in real time.

  2. Tailored Programs

Your exercises aren’t static—they evolve with your recovery and performance goals. I assess your progress every session and make adjustments immediately.

  3. Hands-On Treatment

Prioritize hands-on treatment and I have the time to work on soft tissue, joint mobility, and muscle performance without being rushed to see the next patient. You get the full benefit of manual therapy, not five minutes of massage gun before moving on.

  4. Comprehensive Assessments

We look at your movement patterns, strength, mobility, and stability in ways traditional clinics often don’t. This helps prevent injuries before they happen and ensures you’re building durability for your sport.

  5. Extended Session Time

Most sessions last over an hour, giving us the ability to combine assessment, therapy, and performance training in a single visit.

What the Research Says

While some studies show that group physical therapy can produce similar measurable outcomes for pain and basic function in general populations, these studies don’t account for athletic performance goals. For athletes, one-on-one care allows:

  • Real-time correction of biomechanics

  • Customized progression of strength, mobility, and sport-specific skills

  • Faster recovery and reduced risk of re-injury

  • Improved adherence and motivation through personalized guidance

These benefits are critical for athletes who want to return stronger and more durable than before their injury.

The Bottom Line

Athletes deserve care that is specific, individualized, and performance-driven. One-on-one physical therapy isn’t just a luxury—it’s how you optimize recovery, reduce risk, and build long-term athletic durability. That’s why Undefeated PT was built the way it is: to get athletes better with individualized, hands-on care that works.

If you’re ready to take your recovery and performance to the next level, one-on-one care is the way forward.
