Blood Flow Restriction Therapy: The Cheat Code for Rehab and Performance

At Undefeated Physical Therapy and Performance, we’re always looking for smart, effective ways to help athletes recover faster, train harder, and perform at their best—without unnecessary wear and tear. One of the most powerful tools we use is Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy.
What is Blood Flow Restriction Therapy?
Just like it sounds, Blood Flow Restriction Therapy involves temporarily restricting blood flow to one of the limbs—either the arms or legs—using a specialized cuff (similar to a blood pressure cuff). This restriction is carefully measured and controlled to be safe and effective.
Upper body BFR: Typically applied at 40–60% of limb occlusion pressure
Lower body BFR: Typically applied at 60–80% of limb occlusion pressure
Our clinic uses an automated BFR system that calculates your limb occlusion pressure and adjusts to the appropriate level. This eliminates guesswork and maximizes safety.

Why is BFR a Game Changer?
BFR allows you to train or rehab with light loads (as low as 20–30% of your one-rep max) and still gain the same benefits as high-intensity training. For example, if your bench press max is 200 lbs, with BFR, you might only need 40 lbs to trigger the same muscular response.
That means:
Less joint stress
Reduced soreness
Faster recovery
Accelerated strength and muscle growth
How It Works: The Science Behind the Gains
BFR tricks your body into thinking it’s working harder than it is by creating metabolic stress and low oxygen conditions. This stimulates the mTOR pathway (mechanistic Target of Rapamycin), which plays a key role in:
Muscle protein synthesis
Collagen production
Fat metabolism
Bone strength and density
It also leads to a surge in Human Growth Hormone (HGH)—up to 290% increase, according to research—which supports tissue repair and recovery. For athletes, this is huge. More HGH means faster healing between games, better recovery from training, and enhanced long-term performance.
Ideal for Rehab, Recovery, and Performance
At Undefeated PT, we use BFR therapy in many ways:
Post-surgical rehab (e.g., Tommy John or UCL repairs): BFR lets us stimulate strength and healing even when the tissue can’t yet handle external loads.
Arm care for baseball and softball players: After an intense outing, BFR allows recovery work without overloading already fatigued tissue.
Pre-game recovery: If you’re pitching tomorrow, BFR lets us activate recovery without causing fatigue that could carry into your next performance.
When the cuff is removed, it creates a “reperfusion effect”—a rush of blood flow into the area—which further promotes healing and nutrient delivery.
Safe. Effective. Proven.
Whether you’re an athlete recovering from surgery, someone working through an injury, or just looking to maximize your strength gains, Blood Flow Restriction Therapy is a proven, research-backed tool that helps you get better results, faster—with less wear and tear.
